I Tried Three Mascaras with the Same Claims

When I look for a mascara, I tend to fall towards ones that give more length and definition than volume. I have tested many mascaras, I have eleven in my drawer now which I know is a bit excessive. Besides those eleven I’ve tried plenty more, I’ve got a good amount of mascara experience under my belt.

I just picked up three mascaras that have similar claims and I’ve decided to compare the three of them and see which one really does as it says. They all fall under ten dollars which doesn’t mean they’ll suck, lots of affordable mascaras are great.

Mascara 1: L’Oréal Telescopic Original Mascara

Shade: 905 Black

Retail Price: $8.29

Claims: -Up to 60% length

        –Flexible precision brush

        –Intensifying length

My Thoughts: This is definitely the most lengthening mascara I have ever tried, it also provided a good amount of definition. One of the first things my friend said to me on the day I wore this mascara was about how long my lashes looked. The applicator has rubber bristles and was very flexible as it claimed, it was also very tall and narrow. I didn’t have a problem with it smudging or flaking off throughout the day and I think it did everything it claimed to do. The packaging also slightly resembled a telescope which is just something extra I noticed. I am very happy with how this performed, and I look forward to wearing it again. I would definitely recommend this mascara!

Mascara 2: Wet n' Wild Mega Length Mascara

Shade: C139 Very Black

Retail Price: $2.99

Claims: -Up to 80% longer lashes

        - Clump free

        -Visibly lifts lashes

My Thoughts: It took me a while to build up the length with this mascara, after a few coats I still did not see that much of a difference. This applicator was quite thick and had rubber bristles. While the mascara didn’t smudge or flake throughout the day, I didn’t see too much definition as the mascara got clumpy with just a few coats, I attempted to go in with a lash brush to comb out some of the clumps and I thought it helped a bit. As for the lifting claim, I didn’t see much of a difference. I didn’t curl my lashes for this application and I found using this mascara just kept my lashes right where they were. For the very affordable price I think the quality makes sense, I was able to get an okay amount of length to my lashes, but the definition wasn’t really there. This product wasn’t horrible, but I’d rather spend a few dollars more and reach for something that I know works.

Mascara 3: Maybelline Lash Stiletto Ultimate Length
Shade: 951 Very Black

Retail Price: $7.49

Claims: -Instantly builds 70% longer looking lashes

        - Luminous Shine

        - Grip & Extend Brush reaches the lashes at all angles

My Thoughts: The mascara applied very easy, it didn’t take long at all the build up the length. However, as I put on a second or third coat the mascara began to clump. While it did that it still seemed to perform very nice, it provided good length and it seemed to cover all my lashes as it claimed. I would also say that my lashes look a bit more shiny than usual. The one thing I noticed that I didn’t particularly like was the fact the mascara began to flake throughout the day, it wasn’t a ton of flaking but since there are mascaras in the similar price range that wouldn’t flake, I’d prefer to reach for those. Over all I liked the product, but I didn’t love it. I would be much happier reaching for other mascaras in my collection.

My final thoughts on these products are mostly positive. I love trying and comparing new products and most of the time the results are good but occasionally, I come across something that doesn’t work for me or just a plain dud. While working with these three mascaras there were only a few flaws here and there. I didn’t absolutely hate or despise any of these products and I think I’d willing reach for both the L'Oréal and Maybelline mascaras again. I’m still a bit iffy on the Wet n’ Wild one but I do not hate it. I graded the mascaras according to three scenarios on a five-point scale just to break it down a bit more.

  1. Awesome! What a great idea--write a review on something you actually care about and this is FUN. Could you condense this into a shorter, more concise piece?
